Battery Charger (MCP73844) - Overheating of p-MOSFET
Here are some suggested steps you can use to check why the p-MOSFET is overheating in the battery charging circuit:
- Calculate the power dissipation in the transistor. Calculation examples and formulas are provided in Section 6 of the device datasheet, which can be found on the product landing page.
- The higher the value of RDSON, the more power is dissipated causing your MOSFET to heat up. The aim is to have a RDSON value as minimum as possible.
