dsPIC33/PIC24 - ECAN Transmission Doesn't Work

On the dsPIC33/PIC24, why doesn't the ECAN transmission work even when the transceiver connections are OK? The CAN Tx output (C1TX/C2TX ) is permanently high and the minimum transmission of one bit is not seen on the CAN Tx pin.

This might occur when the CAN Rx input (C1RX/C2RX ) is not in the right state (high). If the RPx pin used for C1RX has an analog function, this pin must be configured as a digital input.
