Definition: Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor

A Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) is a synchronous motor whose field excitation is provided by permanent magnets on the rotor. PMSMs output a sinusoidal back-EMF waveform which is more compatible with the Field Oriented Control (FOC) algorithm than the trapezoidal back-EMF output by BLDC motors.
