Booting a Linux® Image

This topic lists step-by-step instructions for booting a Linux image to the ATSAMA5D27-SOM1-EK1. As an example (and demo), you will download and flash a demonstration image from the Linux4SAM website.

What you will need:

  • ATSAMA5D27-SOM1-EK1
  • Micro-B USB cable (included in the ATSAMA5D27-SOM1-EK1 box)
  • Personal computer (Windows, MacOS, Linux) running a terminal program
  • SD Memory Card (1 GB or larger)

  3. Flash demo image to SD Memory Card
  4. Download, install, and configure a Terminal program onto your personal computer.
  5. Ensure the jumpers are in the correct position
  6. Connect your PC to J10 using a Micro-B USB cable
  7. Press RESET button PB1

Download demonstration image

The latest demonstration images for the ATSAMA5D27-SOM1-EK1 are available on the Linux4SAM.org website:

There you will find three sets of images created from one of three Build Systems:

If this is your first time downloading an image, and you are not sure which one to download, try the Buildroot based demo without display: linux4sam-buildroot-sama5d27_som1_ek-X.Y.img.bz2 where X.Y is the version number.

Flash and insert SD Memory Card

Flash demo image to SD Memory Card

The easiest method to flash an image to a SD Memory Card is to use the utility program Etcher. It is available for Windows, MacOS, or Linux.

First, locate and select the image:

Second, locate and select the SD Memory Card:

Third, select flash. This will take a few minutes.

Insert SD Memory Card into J12

Once the image has been successfully flashed to the SD Memory Card, insert it into J12:

Download, install, and configure a Terminal program onto your personal computer

There are several choices for terminal programs. Below is a list of popular programs. Many are free to download and a few are included with the operating system or distributions.

Windows

macOS

  • Screen
    • Find the serial port: $ ls /dev/tty.*
    • To run: $ screen /dev/tty.usbmodemFD121 115200
    • To quit: $ Control-a $ Control-\
  • minicom
  • CoolTerm
  • Serial
    • Available from the Apple App Store

Linux

Ensure the jumpers are in the correct position

Connect your PC to J10 using a Micro-B USB cable. This will also power the development board

Press the Reset button PB1

The boot sequence will display in the terminal window. At the end the command line will prompt the user to log in.

Proper operation of the image and the on-board J-Link Debugger will be indicated by:

  • LED D5 - Flashing Blue indicates operation of the Linux operating system image
  • LED D4 - Flashing Green indicates operation of the J-Link Debugger
