How do you program a board that only has an ICSP™/PICkit™ 3 interface with another programmer?

How can I program a board that only has a 6-pin In-Circuit Serial Programming™ (ICSP™)/PICkit™ 3 interface using another programmer?

The PICKit 3 has a different programming connector than either the MPLAB® ICD4 or MPLAB REAL ICE™ In-circuit emulator. There is an adaptor available from microchipDIRECT (part no. AC16410) which allows an ICD4 or a REAL ICE In-circuit emulator to program boards with the PICKit 3 connectors.
