On the host PC, install the latest version of MPLAB® X IDE from:
http://www.microchip.com/mplabx
Once installed, launch MPLAB X IDE and install the Remote USB Debugging plugin to begin.
Install Plugin Trial Version
To view and install available plugins:
- In MPLAB X IDE, select Tools > Plugins and click on the Available Plugins tab.
- Select the plugin by checking its checkbox and then click Install (Figure 1).
- Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the plugin. Some plugins may be dependent on the modules in other plugins for their functionality to be implemented. The Plugins Manager warns you when this is the case.
- Once installed, the plugin will be listed under the Installed tab, where it can be deactivated, reactivated or uninstalled.
- Look for your tool under Tools > Embedded. If you do not see it, you may need to close and re-open MPLAB X IDE.

Install Plugin Full Version
Go to the MicrochipDirect.com web site for the plugin.
Follow the instructions on the web site to download to a folder on your computer. Once download is complete:
- Extract the .nbm file from the downloaded ZIP file.
- In MPLAB X IDE, select Tools > Plugins and click on the Downloaded tab.
- Click Add Plugins. Find and select the .nbm file and Open it (Figure 2).
- Click Install to install the plugin. Ensure that the checkbox next to the plugin name is checked (Figure 3).
- Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the plugin.
- Once installed, the plugin will be listed under the Installed tab, where it can be deactivated, reactivated or uninstalled.
- Look for your tool under Tools > Embedded. If you do not see it, you may need to close and re-open MPLAB X IDE.

Access the Plugin Functions
Once the plugin is installed, you will have access to Remote USB menu items.
- New Connection - Set up a new remote connection. Same as Tools > Options > Embedded > Manage Tools > Manage Remote Connections > New. See Add and Enable/Disable a Remote USB Connection.
- Edit Connections - Edit existing remote connections. Same as Tools > Options > Embedded > Manage Tools > Manage Remote Connections . See Duplicate, Edit, or Delete a Remote USB Connection.
- Download - Download a file containing the MPLAB Communications Library to install on the remote machine. This library version matches the library version already installed on the host PC when you installed MPLAB X IDE.
