USB Driver Installation
Select a section below that matches your operating system and follow the instructions to install the probe USB driver.
Linux OS & Mac OS X
You do not need to install a USB driver. Linux and Mac operating systems use a generic USB driver.
Windows 8 OS & Windows 7 OS 64-bit
Ensure you are in administrator mode to ensure the proper installation of the drivers.
The USB driver is pre-installed with MPLAB X IDE and then automatically installed. No action from you is required.
Windows 7 OS 32-bit
Ensure you are in administrator mode to ensure the proper installation of the drivers.
The USB driver is pre-installed with MPLAB X IDE. To finish the installation, plug the probe into a PC USB slot. Wait for the probe LED to stop blinking to signal installation is complete.
Windows XP OS (32-bit & 64-bit)
Install MPLAB X IDE and then plug the probe into a PC USB slot. After this, you will need to manually install the drivers for this operating system. Follow the instructions below.
Manually Install USB Driver
Depending on your operating system, you may need to install the USB driver manually. Please see one of the previous sections that apply to your operating system to see if you need to manually install the driver.
To install the driver manually:- Open the Device Manager (under Control Panel). Look under “Other Devices” for “Unknown Device”.
- Right-click on your tool name or “Unknown Device” and select “Update Driver Software”.
- In the Update Driver Software dialog, select “Browse my computer for driver software”.
Note: DO NOT select “Search automatically for updated driver software”. This will install the wrong device driver. If you accidentally select this, back out or exit and repeat these steps to install the correct driver.
- Locate the correct device driver for your system. The default locations for the 32-bit device driver is:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microchip\MPLABX\ThirdParty\ SEGGER\USBDriver\x86\JLink.inf
The default locations for the 64-bit device driver is:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microchip\MPLABX\ThirdParty\ SEGGER\USBDriver\x64\JLinkx64.inf - If a Windows Security dialog pops up, select “Install this driver software anyway” to proceed to install the drivers.
Hardware System Installation
Follow these steps to install the hardware:
- Connect the J-Link probe with the host system via USB. This will provide communications with the PC and power to the probe.
- Connect the J-Link probe with the target device via JTAG. Use the J-Link Microchip Adapter to provide either a 4-wire or 2-wire connection. See J-Link Microchip Adapter for details.
- Power-on the device
You are now ready to debug your application.
