Use the MPLAB® PM3 with MPLAB® IPE to program a device following the steps below:

Install MPLAB® IPE

Install the MPLAB IPE software on your PC.

Setup Programmer Hardware

Set up the MPLAB PM3 Hardware in preparation for programming a device.

Launch MPLAB IPE and Setup for Programming

Launch MPLAB IPE and setup the software as follows:

  1. Select the device you will be programming. To narrow the device list, select the family first.
  2. Select the programming tool. If other tools are plugged into your PC, you may have to specifically select the MPLAB PM3 from a dropdown list.
  3. Click Connect.

Download a Hex File

Download a HEX file to program into the device. Select File > Import > Hex, browse to the file, and select it.

A HEX file may be built from project code in MPLAB X IDE.

Insert and Program the Device

Insert the device to be programmed into the socket module. Position pin one on the device to match the pin one indicator in the socket module. Secure the device by pushing down the silver lever on the socket or closing the clamshell.

To ensure your device is blank, click either Erase or Blank Check in MPLAB IPE. If your device is EPROM, ensure that it is blank before programming.

Click the Program button to program the HEX file into the device.
